ABOUT

Born and raised in Texas, Joel cut his teeth in the bars of Deep Ellum starting at the age of 13. There he would share the stage with Dallas-area natives such as Maren Morris, Kacey Musgraves, Green River Ordinance, and others. By nineteen he had traded in the high-rises and concrete of Dallas for the Steinbeckian Central California farm town of Visalia, California. The influence of Bakersfield legends like Merle Haggard and Buck Owens was unmistakable in this new home, and it would begin to color Joel’s writing.

Following his first release of music under his own name, Joel was lauded for his thoughtful lyricism and the hearty grit of his voice. It was after reading a memoir by Nashville troubadour, Todd Snider, and the fascination that came from his description of the East Nashville songwriting community that Joel piled his humble belongings into his car and drove across the country to experience Tennessee for himself. Since arriving in Nashville in 2015, Joel has released Wildcat (EP), Grand Prairie (Album), and American Singles (EP).

  • “It’s really good” - David Macias (Owner of Thirty Tigers)

  • “It seems a bit tired to call an artist’s sound timeless; however, with Joel Adam Russell, it seems like there’s no other way to describe the Texas native. With heavy doses of fiddle and steel throughout nearly every song and mature writing that feels lived in, Russell’s music strikes a brilliant balance of sounding classic without feeling like it’s trying too hard to recreate the sounds of yesteryear. Unlike many independent artists lately, Russell has been around for quite a few years. With two studio albums filled top-to-bottom with quality songs under his belt, it’s baffling that he hasn’t amassed a greater following.” - Country Chord

  • "The guy is super interesting and bears no resemblance to other musicians of his ilk." - The Visalia Times-Delta

  • "Joel's music is a refreshing fusion of Country, Americana, Blues, and Pop. His voice is expressive and vibrant and he adopts masculine legato-filled melodies for the vocal lines... When it comes to putting pen to paper, the lyrics have evidently been carefully crafted to recount poignant narratives." - Those Milk Teeth // UK independent music blog
